Garage Door Safety Sensor Issues

There are many causes for a garage door malfunction. Sometimes, a do-it-yourself solution is possible. When it’s time to call in a professional, we can help you get your door fixed without the hassle of a service call. If you can’t figure it out on your own or want a stress-free experience, we can also fix it for you.

There are many different configurations of garage door sensors that can create a variety of issues. Garage door sensors are attached to the track or wall. They transmit an invisible beam across the length of the door to detect obstructions that would keep the door from successfully opening or closing. If the beam is interrupted, it will prevent the door from closing. This protects your garage door from being damaged, however, it also protects your loved ones, pets, and visitors.

Sensor alignment should be checked on a regular basis to ensure they are working properly. It’s also easy to knock a sensor out of alignment or damage them during your daily routine. The diagram and videos below illustrate how the lights will appear when they are working correctly and tips to adjust them if needed. If these tips don’t resolve your issue, schedule an appointment below to reach a trained professional at Southwest Garage Doors.

If you have successfully aligned the sensors and are still having problems, interfering with sunlight could be part of the problem. Living in the Sunshine State has its benefits, but garage door sensors don’t react well to misdirected sunlight. Evaluate the sunbeam direction throughout the day to determine if the sunlight is shining brightly into the transmitting sensor. Try swapping the placement of the sensor output and input locations to avoid direct sunbeams. Or you may need to replace the sensor to avoid losing transmission or signal strength.

Sensors may seem like a small part of your garage door but could be the most important part of its proper functionality and safety. Call Southwest Garage Door today for help with your safety sensor issues.

    Garage Door Safety Sensor Lights

    • Garage Door Safety Sensors are small sensors attached to the track or wall that transmit an invisible beam.
    • If this beam is disrupted or the sensors are not pointed in a close proximity to each other, your door WILL NOT CLOSE.
    • Sensors are a safety feature and keep you and your family safe from closing garage doors.

    Sunlight Sensitivity Issues

    • It is possible that your sensors are perfectly aligned but, the DOOR STILL WONT CLOSE.
    • Sunlight can be a factor, especially in the sunniest state around. As our seasons change, so does the sun, and can cause interference with your sensor beam.
    • You can try swapping out the sending sensor to the position receiving the most sun instead of the receiving sensor.
    • Or try replacing the sensor to resolve transmission and receiving issues.
